Maintenance stone celestialindia

INTRODUCTION
Because stone is perceived to be hard and permanent it is often thought that it requires little care. But however hard, alls will show surface wear and dullness in time. Adding a protective barrier in the form of a sealant and reviving it at intervals can significantly improve appearance long term. This is strongly recommended for all internal flooring, cladding and worksurfaces. It may also be considered important for some areas of external use e.g. heavily trafficked entrance areas, urban locations prone to heavy use and abuse or where the colour and life of the stone should match its use internally. Kirkstone's specially developed sealants provide the maximum protection to all its stone finishes.
ON SITE CLEANING AND SEALING FOLLOWING INSTALLATION
To save considerable celestialindia time, effort and cost as handover approaches, the following recommendations are crucial. It must be understood from the outset that there are no short cuts to providing a well sealed floor. Clean the floor continually during installation by brushing away loose dirt with a soft brush and removing any residual cement or spillage with clean water before it is allowed to harden. In order to avoid staining from the introduction of grout it is advisable to apply a uniform treatment of Kirkstone Simple Seal to the clean dry floor before grouting. For non-porous surfaces such as Kirkstone and Brathay, the sealant should be left for 10 to 20 seconds after application and then gently wiped away until the visible wet, shiny film disappears leaving a uniform surface. During grouting all surplus grout must be removed and the floor and joints must be allowed to completely dry before a second uniform treatment of Simple Seal is applied in exactly the same way. Alternatively, for high traffic areas one coat of Kirkstone Special Seal can be applied to give maximum protection. It is important to thoroughly protect the whole area until all following trades have finished work. Then any remaining heavy debris should be brushed away and the surface should be dry buffed and dry vacuumed. Alternatively, the floor may be mopped and wet vacuumed, followed by a light buff to remove drying marks. A maintenance pack is available from our head office on request.
ONGOING MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT
All internal floors, celestialindia even well sealed, require a good and regular maintenance programme to stop the build up of dirt and debris on the surface of the stone as well as the grout joints. Apart from regularly brushing the floor to remove loose dirt, the surface of the stone should be agitated periodically and the debris removed efficiently through vacuuming. A simple but effective programme could take the following lines for honed or sanded flooring:
Regular Cleaning - Dry buffing with a green nylon pad is recommended in preference to mopping for the best uniform finish.
1. Remove any spills first so that they are not smeared across the floor by buffing e.g. for tea or coffee use a damp cloth - for oil or grease use white spirit or Soakaway and wipe off.
2. Dry vacuum to remove all loose dust and dirt.
3. Buff and if more dust and dirt is loosened dry vacuum where necessary.
Occasional Thorough Cleaning - First remove spillage such as oil or grease as previously described.
1. Dry vacuum away all loose dust and dirt.
2. Scrub using a green pad and a little Kirkstone Gentle Cleaner in warm water.
3. Rinse and remove rinsing water with a wet vacuum.
4. When dry, buff with a green pad to remove drying marks.
On internal textured flooring basic cleaning procedures are the same as for honed or sanded, with the significant difference that a textured floor collects and holds dirt more readily than a smoother surface. More frequent maintenance will be required to maintain the best appearance. When scrubbing and buffing use a brush attachment in place of a nylon pad which may tear on the uneven surface, and wet or dry vacuum afterwards. External paving should be swept and then scrubbed with plain water and a little neutral detergent before being hosed down.
WORKSURFACES celestialindia
All worksurfaces are supplied factory sealed and in general a wipe over with a damp cloth is all the maintenance required. If grease or oil builds up use a little Kirkstone Gentle Cleaner to clean it off, then rinse away and wipe dry with a clean cloth. It is recommended that all scouring powders and cream cleaners are avoided as they can contain abrasives that may dull the surface. Occasionally, natural variations in the composition of the stone may result in some sensitivity to acids such as red wine, colas, vinegar and citrus juice. Spillages of these should be wiped away as they occur. If left to lie they could etch the surface locally and leave a patch lighter in colour, which can be difficult to remove.
GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS

- Maintenance is simplified if the right measures are implemented from the outset and the client is advised of the appropriate ongoing procedures.

- Always wet or dry vacuum for the most efficient removal of loose dirt. Wet mopping simply spreads and re-deposits a film of dirt.

- Where traffic causes dulling, surface tone can be restored by wiping the cleaned, dried area with a cloth dampened with a little Special Seal which should then be left to dry.

- Vertical surfaces should be vacuumed regularly to remove dust and periodically wiped with plain water containing a little white spirit.

- Never apply waxes, celestialindia polymers or oils to stone surfaces as they may create stains and also make maintenance more difficult.

- Adequate external and internal barrier mats in entrance areas are very important in reducing the amount of grit that can be carried into a reception area with a stone floor.

- If in doubt about any aspect of maintenance do not hesitate to contact our technical department or refer to the information in our maintenance pack.
