If the tile is water and moisture sensitive, it is always best to ask the marble manufacturer in order for you to know, so you can avoid water spill with your marble tiles. Of course, if you use marble tile with your flooring, you want to see to it that you are taking care of it to prevent it from damage.

Bonding Fiber Reinforced Resin-Backed Marble Tile - Cut of tile that very thin but are unbreakable with fiber mesh and resin coating at 1/32" - 1/16" thickness. These resin-back coated tiles have a very nonporous and inert bond surface that requires the extra bond strength of custom's 100% Solids Epoxy Mortar in order to install it properly.

Avoiding Discolored Tile and Tile Edges - When cutting the marble, it requires an installation that is more complicated or involves a decorative design pattern. To make the custom cuts in the tiles, use the cutting saw. It requires a liquid to cool the cutting blade. Normally this liquid is water. The cooling water or liquid will build up fine grindings or particles with the cutting saw to be used. Staining of certain tile pieces or tile edges can occur, when the marble tiles are being cut by a single saw. When different colored tiles are to be cut on a single saw, this can be avoided by cleaning the saw to assure that dirt and debris were removed.

As soon as the marble tiles were installed properly at your flooring, you will be amazed with the beauty that these tiles can bring your home. Since these tiles can add up to the beauty of your home, it is just right to maintain it and take good are of it. Keep it away from acidic substances and water spill to avoid stains.

Lay a Porcelain Tile Kitchen Floor

Step 1: Pull Up the Old Tile Floor

A new floor is an important aesthetic element in updating any kitchen. In this project an Italian porcelain tile that looks like slate is used to contemporize this kitchen before the new cabinets go in.
To lay a new porcelain tile floor over an old floor, first remove all baseboard moldings from the walls, setting all pieces aside where they will not get broken.
Make sure a dumpster or large trash bin is within easy reach. A wheelbarrow or trash cans with handles are very handy in removing old floor tiles.
You never know what may be underneath an old tile floor, (in this case, old green vinyl tiles), so take care when pulling up the individual pieces. For this project, the green vinyl tiles did not present a problem so they were taken up as well. If you suspect that old tiles might contain asbestos, check with local environmental authorities on safe and proper removal practices in your area.
To make the task of ripping up the tile easier, you can rent a roofing shovel for about $10 a day. These shovels have serrated teeth and built-in fulcrum to make the job much more manageable.
Scrape any cement, glue or adhesive from the subfloor. Make sure the surface is completely free of debris. Fill any holes.

Step 2: Prep the Floor

Mark the floor with chalk where the new cabinets and the island will be placed. You won't have to lay tile in these areas.
You can also make cardboard templates to demarcate where the cabinets and island will go. At least 40", and ideally 52” of clearance is recommended around all sides of the island.

Step 3: Chalk the Tile Grid on the Floor

A new floor goes down before any new cabinets or appliances go in. This project uses Italian-made porcelain tile that look like slate.
Before laying out the new tile floor, create a floor grid with a chalk line (it’s best to do this with someone else). Lay tiles side by side and measure them with grout joints to determine the square size for the grid.
Start along the longest wall to establish your straight wall. Make a mark the size of your tile square. Then snap put the first chalk line the length of the first wall. Mark the square from the back wall and snap a chalk line. Now mark your grid points, making sure that the grid lines line up correctly across the entire floor. Taking special care now will save you headaches when laying down the tile.

Step 4: Lay The Porcelain Tile

Mix consistency of the mortar to the consistency of thick mayonnaise. Apply a thin layer of thin-set mortar using the notches in the 1/4 x 3/8" trowel to set the thickness. Try to get nice even coverage, without covering your grid lines.

Apply a thin layer of mortar on the back of each tile, spreading it with the flat edge of the trowel.
Following the grid lines, lay the tile. Apply even pressure with both hands to set the tile in place. Make sure all the tiles are set at the same level, are square to each other, and that grout lines are even.
Clean up any excess thin-set with a damp sponge. Be sure to squeeze all the water out before wiping the surface.

Step 5: Cut the Floor Tiles

Cut tile for the corners and other areas with a tile or wet saw. The water does a couple of things: a) cools the blade and b) reduces the dust when the tile is cut. You can usually rent a tile or wet saw from a local rental retailer for $50 to $75 a day.
The secret to cutting with a wet saw is to go slowly and not to force tile through with too much pressure.
To fit small pieces of tile along a wall or in a corner, it can be difficult to apply thin-set to the floor. Just apply the thin-set to the back of the small tile pieces.

Step 6: Grout the Floor Tiles

With the whole floor laid out, wait 24 hours before grouting to let the tile set up.
Grout is a major design component in any tiling job. A wide variety of colors is available. Choose one that blends well with the color of your tile.
Start the grouting by using sanded grout to add body to the mix. Stir the grout mixture to about the same consistency as the thin-set, like the consistency of mayonnaise.
Grout dries quickly, so don't mix too much at one time.

Use a float for this job. Hold it at a 45-degree angle and then spread the grout across the tile. The float gently forces the grout into the seams.
Remove most of the grout on the first pass. Let the grout set for a few minutes until it starts to set up, then go back over it with a sponge. If you sponge over wet grout too quickly, you can pull the grout out of the seam -- so go at a slow, even pace. Let the grout dry over night before you walk on it.

Care of Granite and Marble Surfaces

When it is sealed and cleaned properly, you will easily preserve the natural beauty of this unique surface. Stone Sealers are easy to apply. Simply spray on 2 applications within 5 minutes of each other and wipe off the excess. Depending on the absorbency of the stone , resealing can take place from once per year up to 5 years. The finer graineds are usually more absorbent and will require more frequent sealing. With today's technology in sealing products, staining rarely occurs.

For cleaning, always use a product specifically designed to clean natural; not over-the-counter cleaning products. Periodically, we recommend using a stone polish on your granite countertop, which will enhance the dark colors of your stone. ·         Avoid abrasive cleaners such as Comet and Softscrub.

·         Use the flat side of a razor blade for removing stuck on tape residue, paint, glue, dried food etc.

·         Aluminum will not scratch granite, but will leave a trail. You can get rid of it by scrubbing VERY hard with a pencil eraser.

·         Oils will leave a dark blotchy stain on granite. These can be removed with a poultice solution of baking soda. Many people consider such a darkening, "patina or character.

Dimensional stone

Dimensional stone , or architectural, includes many different rock types and refers to any stone that is capable of being quarried in large blocks and subsequently processed into slabs, blocks, flagstones, etc. Varying quantities of dimension stone are used in a variety of architectural applications. Natural stone is used for exterior cladding on office buildings, as paving stone for sidewalks and courtyards, for curbing and retaining walls, and as tiles for interior floors, stairs and walls. Stone is used for cemetery monuments and other memorial applications. Some irregular blocks of stone are used in landscaping applications (waterfalls, gardens).

In general, the most common types of rock used as dimension stone include granite , limestone, sandstone, marble and slate. The commercial term "granite" includes coarse crystalline rocks that are free from impurities and are capable of being cut and polished. Commercial "marble" is a fine-to-coarse crystalline rock composed primarily of calcite or dolomite that is durable and capable of taking a high polish. Limestones and sandstones are fine-grained sedimentary rocks that are quarried for their consistent textures and colours and general workability. Slate is a hard, layered rock that is mostly used for roofing tiles and as landscaping stone.

Marble and Granite – What Produces the Shine?

Many people make the assumption that marble , granite and other finely polished naturals shine because a 'polish' has been added to them. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Naturals are made of crystals. The crystals are made up of different minerals. Each mineral forms a different crystal shape. These different crystals interlock together to make up the stone. When stone is first quarried it has a very rough texture to Indian Black Galaxy Granite its surface as it breaks along the crystal joints. By using a series of graduated grinders the stone is ground down. The grinders are normally made from industrial diamonds and to start the process a very rough one is used. It is the same principle as sanding down wood. You start with glass paper that is very coarse and gradually use finer and finer glass paper until you have a fine, smooth finish to the wood. With stone the glass paper is replaced with diamond studded pads and these get finer and finer Indian Black Galaxy Granite.

What the grinding is doing is cutting the rough edges off the stone by scratching it and as the diamonds become smaller and smaller the scratches become finer and ultimately microscopic. What you end up with is a very smooth surface to the Indian Black Galaxy Granite stone. The crystals have by a slow process of finer and finer grinding been worn down until on the surface they are all perfectly flat and smooth with each other. A perfectly flat surface will reflect the light uniformly and will look like glass.

Consider a mirror that reflects light uniformly giving you a clear sharp image. Make the glass curved or rippled and you get a less clear, less sharp image reflected back. The same applies to stone. If the crystals are flat then you get a perfect image reflected back Indian Black Galaxy Granite and the stone looks incredibly shiny. Roughen the surface slightly and the reflected light ceases to give you a perfect reflection and the stone begins to dull. Any interference with the stones surface can cause this dulling to appear. It could be a series of minute scratches made by dirt or it could be caused by acid materials etching into the stone destroying its shine in that region.

To get the shine back the stone must be ground down again. Consequently the shine on a stone is not the product of adding some chemical to the stone but is a property of the stone itself.. The harder the stone the more difficult it is to grind but the greater degree of shine that can be achieved, which is why polished has the greatest degree of shine, followed by then limestone.

Granite Worktops - How to Choose the Perfect One for your Home

There is no question about it – granite worktops are the top choice of most interior designers and homeowners the world over. And it's really not that surprising. Granite is a very durable stone that can resist practically all kinds of damage. In addition, the appearance is one of luxury and elegance. worktops are practically the perfect choice.

It might sometimes be difficult to discern what the entire slab will look like just by looking at a small sample. What we suggest is go to an actual workshop where they cut and polish large granite slabs. This way, you can see the actual appearance of each slab and you can imagine how they will look in your home.

There are several such workshops scattered all around the world. Once the blocks of granite are quarried from the mountains, they are sent to Verona, Italy where they are cut up into still large slabs. These are then shipped to workshops in many countries. If it is possible for you to head to Italy to choose your granite worktop, that's great. But for most people, this is not possible.

What you can do instead is search the Internet for a granite workshop that is near your area. This kind of shopping might require a bit more effort, but it is certainly more reliable than choosing from swatches and possibly ending up with a granite worktop that doesn’t match your interior design.

Regular household cleaners can contain chemicals that are harsh and will strip away the seal which leaves it open to stains. Warm soapy water is suggested but be aware that after a while it can leave a thin film that leaves the countertop with a dull appearance. Also be aware of anything containing acids which will cause the seal to become ineffective like citrus fruits and even cosmetics on the counter.

Though you can have it professionally installed if you have ever laid tile you can install a granite tile countertop and save. The steps are basically the same and not too complicated. Just make sure you use the correct adhesive for granite. It is a fairly simple do-it-yourself project if you have any knowledge of laying tiles.

Quality Natural Stones in Interior Design

Natural stone have been used by man throughout centuries primarily due to their beauty, variety and durability. Today as before their role in interior design cannot be overestimated.

Naturals can contribute to traditional and contemporary interiors in many ways, from marble wall or floor tiles to limestone windowsills, let alone worktops in the kitchen or bath surrounds and vanity tops in the bathroom. Natural stones also go well with other interior design materials, such as wood or glass.

Even a small piece of quality stonework can make a lot of difference. My favourite examples of stonework for the sitting room are hearths, windowsills and table tops. For the more adventurous, a multi-stone floor inset would easily be the centerpiece of any room. However, nothing beats tiled floors, better still if accompanied by skirting made of the same natural stone.

The key principle is to use quality natural stones with top aesthetical and technical characteristics. Quality of the natural stones is driven by a number of factors, the state of the quarry, quality of the block, quality of the machinery and stone grading process at the cutting factory, commitment to quality of the stone supplier who chooses the quarry/factory/stone. You should ask your stone supplier for advice on different grades of a particular natural stone before you make a decision based on quality and budget constraints. Based on my experience, quality should never be compromised.

Fire surround is a good example. In most cases, quality of the natural stone and craftwork play a bigger role that the design itself. There is only one step from a luxurious piece to a tacky one. My favourite natural stones for luxury fire surrounds include Statuario marble, White Cappuccino limestone and Rosso Lepante marble. Fire surrounds are made either of slabs or blocks. Most contemporary and some traditional designs can be made of slabs. Generally, a piece made of slabs costs less than one made of a block.

I always use an opportunity to mention marble windowsills. In Sweden, windowsills made of natural stones are as common as snow in the winter. The reasons for that are twofold, decorative effect and practicality (they are hygienic and easy to maintain). I believe that many interior design projects would benefit from the use of marble (or other natural stone) windowsills.

I strongly believe that the use of quality natural stones in interior design is an investment that pays off.

The first step in learning to maintain stone surfaces is to identify the floor type. Is the floor a natural stone or man-made masonry? Identifying stone type can be difficult at first; if in doubt, consult a certified stone care professional.

Popular natural stones used in floors include:

• Marble: A hard and durable floor covering that, under normal conditions, requires little maintenance other than regular daily care. A naturally occurring stone, marble is a form of limestone that is hard enough to take a polish. Many grades and colors are available, from Sicilian white to Belgian black and the colors of Roman stone. 
   
• Granite: Granite is an igneous stone that has cooled into a hard compact mass. Colors range from dark gray to white and silver, with occasional shades of black, blue and green. is one of the stronger stones, and, because of its tightly bonded atomic structure, one of the most durable. 
   
• Slate: A metamorphic rock composed of shale and clay deposits, slate has a very fine texture. Its colors vary from blue-gray and different shades of green to blue-green. 
   
• Sandstone: A sedimentary rock composed mostly of sand grains, sandstone offers a variety of colors. Red-brown is a popular shade, as well as light yellow, gray or blue. 
   
• Quartzite: Quartzite, formed from sedimentary deposits of sand grains, is much harder than sandstone. It contains minute flakes of mica, which reflect light and cause the surfaces to sparkle in appearance. Quartzite colors are gold and olive shades or silvery gray-green. 
   
• Limestone: Limestone is a sandy sedimentary rock and contains variable quantities of calcium carbonate and quartz. Common colors are light gray or tan, with occasional shades of yellow, white and pale brown.
   
  Natural stones range in hardness: sandstone is the softest, granite and quartzite are the hardest. Stone flooring is laid in tile size or slabs, which vary in thickness and are set in a screeded concrete sub-floor. Cement grout appears at the joints between stone slabs. 
   
• Terrazzo: This popular flooring is used in high-traffic areas where appearance and cleanliness are highly desired. Terrazzo is composed of crushed chips, angular in nature and embedded in a cement matrix. A wide variety of colors and shades are available. 
   
• Clay or ceramic tiles: Ceramic tiles are composed of a basic clay and are manufactured the way they have been for thousands of years. The clay with water added is fired in a kiln at carefully controlled conditions.

Many different clay tiles are used as floor surfaces. Some of the most popular are quarry tiles, faience tiles, paver tile and brick. All are available in a variety of colors -- both glazed and unglazed -- and are installed in a bed of cement matrix.

Finally, there are cement or concrete floors, which are among the least attractive but most durable and maintainable surfaces.

A stone floor maintenance program involves other factors besides stone identification. Consider the age of the floor. Is it new or is it well worn?

Initial maintenance on new floors may require different cleaning techniques and the use of a penetrating seal. Older, severely scratched stone floors may need a restoration procedure to bring them back to an acceptable appearance.

If you are assumed maintenance duties on an existing stone floor, ask how it was maintained in the past. Find out which chemicals were used in treating the floor, and whether it requires penetrating sealers and impregnators, or floor finish.

Ten things you must know about Granite

Absorbency: Granite is impervious to water and is in fact, less absorbent than most solid surfaces. It is commonly used as building material for high-rise buildings due to its ability to withstand gale force winds and rain. It is the primary product for kitchen counter tops because of its ability to repel water, stay hygienic and clean.

Stains: is resistant to stain provided any liquid spilled on its top is wiped away as quickly as possible. However, even water can soak into a black galaxy granite top and leave a dark spot. Scratches: Granite is highly scratch resistant and normal daily use will not adversely affect your top.

Maintenance: Routine cleaning using the right products is generally all that is required to maintain the beauty of your. Maintenance will assist to restore original shine. This involves a re-application of a penetrating sealer and rebuffing where necessary.

Heat: Granite is heat resistant and can withstand the heat of cooking pots and pans without damage.

Color: Granite is composed of a variety of minerals each of which has specific performance properties. The hardest mineral commonly found in granite is quartz. This is a somewhat translucent white/gray colored mineral that is responsible for the hardness of granite. In addition, each granite stone varies in color, shading, texture and veining. No two are the same.

Hygiene: Bacteria is found everywhere in our environment including all solid kitchen surfaces. Regular cleaning of your granite, like any other top is recommended using an anti-bacterial soap or other recommended cleaning products (see our welcome pack for further details).
